Why I Love Custom Laser Engraving (And Why It's About So Much More Than Pretty Things)

One of the questions I get asked from time to time is, "You're a designer and photographer, so why laser engraving?"
It's a fair question.
After all, on the surface it might look like I'm simply taking a piece of metal, wood, acrylic, or leather, and putting a design onto it. The end result is usually something shiny, personalised, and visually appealing.
But for me, laser engraving has never really been about creating pretty things.
It's about creating meaningful things.
Just like when it comes to photography, every piece I make tells a story. Sometimes it's a happy story. Sometimes it's a sentimental one. Occasionally it's a story of remembrance. Whatever the reason, the engraving itself is usually just the vehicle for something much more important.
Turning Memories Into Something Tangible

One of the things I love most about photography is being able to capture special moments and create lasting memories. I can take that so much further with custom engraving, because it allows me to turn those memories into physical objects.
Whilst a photograph sitting on a phone or in a frame is nice, and a collection of pictures stored on a hard drive are also nice; there's something different about holding those physical memories in your hand.
I've created engraved pieces featuring beloved pets, family photos, meaningful dates, special messages, and artwork drawn by children. Every one of those items started as an image or an idea, but ended up becoming something tangible that could be carried, displayed, gifted, or treasured.
There's something incredibly satisfying about taking a memory and giving it a permanent home which can be worn or carried, not just displayed.
Pets Are Family Too

If you've ever owned a dog, cat, or any animal that has become part of your family, you'll understand this immediately.
I've worked on a lot of custom pet engravings, and they are easily some of my favourite projects.
Sometimes it's a pet tag featuring a cartoon version of a gorgeous doggo. Other times it's a detailed portrait engraved onto a pendant or keyring.
What I find interesting is that people rarely order these pieces because they need them.
They order them because they love their pets.
The engraving becomes a celebration of a loving companion that greets them at the door, keeps them company, makes them laugh, and becomes part of their everyday life.
As pet owners, we take thousands of photos of our animals. Believe me, I've taken my fair share as well! But taking those photos and creating an engraving from them is a way of turning those memories into something a little more permanent.
The Best Gifts Are Deeply Personal

I've always believed that the best gifts aren't necessarily the most expensive ones.
They're the ones that show thought.
Anyone can walk into a shop and buy a generic gift, but a personalised engraving is different.
It tells the recipient that someone took the time to create something specifically for them.
Maybe it's their favourite quote.
Maybe it's a photo that means something special.
Maybe it's a comic or an inside joke that only two people understand.
Those personal touches are what transform an ordinary object into a keepsake.
Years later, people often won't remember how much a gift cost, but they will remember how it made them feel.
Laser Engraving Things That Last

Another reason I enjoy laser engraving is its permanence.
I love photos, but the fact is that unless they are properly cared for, printed images will eventually fade. Vinyl stickers will peel and wear away over time, and even the best inks will eventually wear away.
Meanwhile, a properly engraved design becomes part of the material itself.
That's important because many of the items I create are intended to carry memories, and memories deserve something that lasts as long as possible.
When someone asks me to engrave a special date, a paw print of a beloved pet, or a message for a loved one, what they're really after is something they hope to keep for years. That makes me happy because I like knowing the finished piece has a good chance of being around long after it leaves my workshop.
It's Practical Too

Of course, just like with photography, not every engraving is purely sentimental. There are plenty of practical reasons to engrave something.
Pet tags help lost pets find their way home.
Keyrings can carry emergency contact information.
Tools can be identified and personalised.
Business products can be branded permanently.
Awards and recognition pieces can commemorate achievements.
The beauty of engraving is that it combines practicality with personality, meaning that something can be useful, as well as meaningful and beautiful at the same time.
Every Piece Is Unique

One thing I never get tired of is seeing how different every project is.
Even when I'm engraving the same type of item, the story behind it is always different.
One customer wants to celebrate a new puppy.
Another wants a gift for their partner.
Someone else wants to commemorate a milestone, achievement, or special moment.
No two pieces are ever truly the same because no two stories are the same.
That's what keeps the work interesting.
Why I Love It

At the end of the day, just like with design and photography, I don't really see laser engraving as a manufacturing process.
I see it as storytelling.
The laser simply happens to be another tool I in my arsenal.
Every custom piece represents a memory, a relationship, a passion, an achievement, or someone important in a person's life.
And if I can help preserve that story in a way that lasts for years to come, then I've done more than create something shiny - I've helped create something meaningful.
For me, that's what custom laser engraving is really all about.
